The Chemist in a Stripey Blue Apron
I'm usually not a fan of advertorials, but FUEllED, a "magazine" published by the UK's The Independent in conjunction with the Toyota Prius (!!??), has some fine foodworthy content, most notably a trip to The Fat Duck with Heston Blumenthal, the "Willy Wonka" of the UK food scene. Note the photo left: yes, he is reading your mind.
Blumenthal is a self-trained chef and food scientist who is both loved and reviled for his undeniably intellectualized approach to cuisine. He's Mr. Wizard in a toque. And he's got major ambitions: "I want to go into the realms of neuro-linguistic programming and cognitive research," he says, eyes wide. "It's not as complicated as it sounds, I promise you, but I'm increasingly fascinated by the psychological side of food." (FUEllED, August 2005)
For those not put off by a cult disguised as a restaurant, the Fat Duck website proves fascinating reading, especially the careers section. An independently wealthy Culinologist? Has Mr. Blumenthal got the job for you!
